Comedy reboot completely misses the mark, and creates no legacy of it’s own.

In this movie one of the characters says “this is a bad idea” in reference to throwing the party at Lebron’s house and yeah that pretty much sums up this movie. This movie feels like it was written by people that spend too much time on social media and is filled with references that would have felt dated two years ago. The writing here is just simply not good. I don’t think this movie is all bad as it is just a fun, goofy movie, but it is deeply flawed.
One of the things I liked about this movie is the cast, well at least the main cast. I had not heard of Damon’s actor Tosin Cole but I thought his comedic timing for most of the movie was on point. Kevin played by Jacob Latimore was also great in his leading role. I found DC Young Fly’s character to be funny as well. The rest of the cast is very forgettable and felt very one dimensional. That is not a dig at any of the actors that is a dig at the writing and the plot that was chosen for this film.
For a movie marketed as a comedy reboot of a well beloved 90s film it sure does not do anything for the legacy of the series. This movie is just not very funny. I found myself chuckling at a few jokes here and there but found myself more annoyed by the amount of unfunny jokes being thrown at me. The writing feels dated and amateurish. The jokes feel like a twitter feed was somehow turned into a movie and that feed hasn’t been refreshed in years.
This movie does nothing to justify its existence. It is not as funny as the original, the characters aren’t as likeable, and the plot is dumb. House Party 2023 is a forgettable, cameo filled mess of an unfunny movie. While it is not the worst movie ever it is an hour and 40 minutes worth of time I won’t get back, time that could have been spent watching much better films.
